Our Story

In 1997, Amy Mahar was a young, newly-promoted sales manager. She didn’t know much about leading people yet, but she did know one thing: She wanted Tammy Wallace on her team.

Amy grew up in a small, blue-collar Michigan town. Dreams were sometimes small there too: Her loftiest aspiration was branch manager of the local bank. But ambition, determination and Midwestern grit are baked into her DNA, and it wouldn’t be long before those dreams grew much bigger.

Tammy spent summers with her mom in Indiana. Her mom was energetic and driven, refusing to conform to any limitations as she fought her way into the male-dominated manufactured housing biz. From her, Tammy learned how to compete for what she wanted—and what she wanted was to succeed in business.

From their upbringing, Amy and Tammy learned to lead with honesty and integrity: work hard, treat people fairly, be direct, face challenges head-on.

Our backgrounds were different but our values were perfectly aligned.

Their paths intersected on a North Carolina golf course at a banking-industry tournament in 1996. Tammy thought Amy was fierce. Amy thought Tammy was magnetic. They hit it off immediately. A year later, Amy was promoted to sales manager. Her first hire would be Tammy. Over the next 25 years, Amy and Tammy worked together at four companies in the mortgage industry. Where one went, the other followed.

They share the conviction that what’s good for the consumer is good for the business, and they earned an industry-wide reputation as the team that “gets sh*t done.”

But over the years, their frustrations mounted: Needlessly complicated procedures. Antiquated technology. Colleagues disappearing behind computer screens. Leaders entrenched in doing things “the way they’d always been done.”

And nobody was talking about what was best for borrowers.

Amy and Tammy value person-to-person communication above all things. They are problem solvers, resourceful. Always asking what’s in it for borrowers. Always thinking of ways to reduce friction in an industry where paperwork seemed to be growing exponentially, even as other industries were becoming increasingly automated.

One fall afternoon, Tammy was home in Tampa, on the phone with Amy in Charlotte. As they worked through their latest frustration with an outdated, inefficient process, Amy said “We need to do this ourselves.” And Tammy said, “Let’s do it.”

We became obsessed with creating a great borrowing experience.

No two mortgages are alike. There are as many variables as there are buyers, and every situation is unique. A one-size-fits-all approach is rarely in the best interest of borrowers.

Amy and Tammy became obsessed with the idea of blueprinting a simplified process that would draw on their deep expertise, longstanding relationships with the nation’s largest lenders, and all the latest technologies. A process that would be custom-made for each client, then delivered with consistent communication and total transparency. And that’s exactly what they did.
